Bryan Fuller Has Many Plans for “Pushing Daisies” Cast

May 3, 2013

When speaking to Kristin Dos Santos at E! – who was notoriously supportive of “Pushing Daisies” when it was on the air – Bryan Fuller revealed that he has some pretty big plans in store for previous cast members, Lee Pace, Kristin Chenoweth, and Anna Friel. Check out what he says about a potential Kickstarter campaign to fund a “Daisies” movie, and whether or not we’ll see our favorite pie makers in Bryan’s current NBC series, “Hannibal.”

• “From the moment the show was canceled [on ABC], I’ve been trying to do a ‘Pushing Daisies’ movie and started writing a script for it. The best chance for it to happen, perhaps the only chance for it to happen, would be through something like Kickstarter. I haven’t even been back in Los Angeles for more than five days since wrapping ‘Hannibal,’ so one of the first orders of business is to find out more from ['Veronica Mars' creator] Rob Thomas to find out how he did it. And to call Warner Brothers to see if it’s something that they would allow… But I would, Oh my God, I would love to get those actors together again. I have what I think is a very cool story; it’s just a matter of finding out if it’s possible. I think it would be such an interesting sentimental return.”

• “I talked to Lee Pace about doing a role on ['Hannibal'] this season. But he was doing a stage play, and so we’re planning to work that out with season two. He’s definitely interested in doing the show, and I would love to work with him again. I also very much want to work with Anna Friel again, and Kristin Chenoweth clearly has to play someone in the Boston arts scene. Perhaps an opera singer. So we are hoping to make that all happen.”

• “I know that we are a cost-efficient show so we’re not hard to pick up. That’s a nice way of saying we’re a bargain show! [laughs] ‘Hannibal’ was really well-produced, we have a fantastic team and our crew in Toronto was just knocking it out of the park [...] It ends on such a huge cliffhanger. It’s a big ending where you’re like, ‘Oh my God, what is going to happen next?!’ So our viewers will be screwed if we don’t have a second season.”

Will Kickstarter Finally Kick Start a “Pushing Daisies” Movie?

Did you hear about the amazing feat “Veronica Mars” creator Rob Thomas managed via Kickstarter, the site used to garner money for projects? He set up a two million dollar donation goal and, if he was to reach it within thirty days or so, he vowed to fans that a movie for the beloved series would follow. Amazingly, the campaign reached its goal after only ten hours. To date, it has raised 3.6 million dollars — with 24 days left.

It has created buzz all throughout Hollywood. For a show that averaged 2.5 million viewers during its 2004-07 run, the breakneck speed of monetary pledges is especially outstanding. It’s resulted in other creative types wondering if they could duplicate the campaign’s success, including Bryan Fuller, who – as we know – has been trying hard to bring “Pushing Daisies” back to life in one form or another. (He’s already written the first act of a would-be film.)

Bryan has since stated that he’s also interested in trying out Kickstarter to test the waters. Although a “Pushing Daisies” movie would be a far more costly endeavor than “Veronica Mars” (due to CGI and prosthetics, Bryan estimates they’d need more like a $10 million budget), the fan donation campaign – if a success – would at least give him the backing to Warner Brothers to continue pursuing a movie; proving that there is still interest in the show. Check out what he said to The Hollywood Reporter on the subject:

“When I saw [the Kickstarter campaign] online, I said to my agent immediately, ‘Can we do this with “Pushing Daisies” or “Wonderfalls”? And he said, ‘”Pushing Daisies” is going to take a lot more than $2 million to make into a movie.’”

“‘Veronica Mars’ hinges on its charming cast and writing and isn’t as effects-laden and dependent on huge productions. You can make a $2 million or $4 million ‘Veronica Mars’ movie. For something like ‘Pushing Daisies,’ which is more elaborate visually and also would require extensive prosthetics and those sorts of complicating production elements, it’s a little more daunting.”

“I never assumed it was a realistic option until Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell pulled it off. It’s going to be easier to get in line behind ‘Veronica Mars.’ The question is whether that next show is going to be as well-suited to this process. I imagine that it’s quite a bit of legwork and loopholes and legalities to navigate. I have so many questions for Rob Thomas — I sent him an e-mail earlier today.”

“If I weren’t in Toronto finishing up on ‘Hannibal,’ I’d be knocking on doors at Warner Brothers, asking, ‘Is this a viable plan for Pushing Daisies’?”

So, what say you, fans: would you donate to a Kickstarter campaign to see a “Pushing Daisies” movie?

Will “Pushing Daisies” be Revived as a Stage Production?

While at 2012 Comic-Con, Bryan Fuller mentioned that he was working on a new “Pushing Daisies” project that was neither a comic book nor a miniseries. In a new interview (video above), Michael Ausiello added that the upcoming revival isn’t a film, either. When pressed if it was moving to Broadway, Bryan merely shrugged and said “perhaps.” What do you think, guys? Will we be seeing “Pushing Daisies” as a stage performance soon? An official announcement will be made once everything is arranged, but hopefully we can expect it soon!

The video above also has some great insight on Bryan’s new NBC shows, “Mockingbird Lane” and “Hannibal.” By the description, it sounds like “Mockingbird Lane” is going to be a feast for the eyes — while “Hannibal” might provide some… interesting recipe ideas.

At his 2012 Comic-Con panel, Bryan Fuller briefly talked about the future of “Pushing Daisies.” Although DC is being stubborn with the release of the comic book, citing a lack of interest, Bryan evidently still has plans on reviving the story in another form. The Hollywood Reporter stated:

Fuller also noted that there is “something” regarding Pushing Daisies that he’s working on, that isn’t a miniseries or a comic but declined to provide additional details. “If it doesn’t go through I look like an asshole!” he joked.

Twitter user @ccrollins added a direct quote said by Bryan at the panel: “There is another Pushing Daisies project that is not a show or a graphic novel that we are working on.” What do you think it could be — a film? And if you’re still interested in seeing a graphic novel adaptation of “Pushing Daisies,” Bryan Fuller urges you to “write DC and tell them you want a ‘Pushing Daisies’ comic!”

Bryan Fuller has just posted on his Twitter the above photo: our first sneak peek of the upcoming “Pushing Daisies” comic! This is just the first page. Also, keep in mind that it is an uncolored preview (although I’m liking the black and white, myself). The comic is currently seeking a new distribution, after their previous publishing company at DC folded. Hopefully we’ll see a publication date soon.

Edit: The colored page has now been posted. Enjoy!

“I would love to do a Pushing Daisies mini-series,” Bryan Fuller Says

Bryan Fuller made an appearance at WonderCon in San Francisco today. (BFO’s webmaster actually got a chance to meet him and tell him about the site. If you’re reading this: Hi, Bryan!) There, he was interviewed by AssignmentX and talked a little bit about fan favorites, “Heroes” and “Pushing Daisies.”

Bryan Fuller was both a co-executive producer and consulting producer for NBC’s HEROES during its run before moving to PUSHING DAISIES on ABC and then briefly returning to HEROES for its final year.

So does he hear about anything happening with the series either movies or otherwise?

“Nothing,” Fuller says. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they waited for a while and then they reinvented it entirely. There have been two regime changes at NBC since HEROES came out and neither of those had a vested interest in the show. I can’t imagine they would go back into the vault, but in five years, they could re-invent the premise.”

Bryan Fuller’s baby PUSHING DAISIES only lasted two seasons on ABC and one could argue at the treatment it received during that second season. However, he isn’t saying goodbye just yet and would love to have it appear on another network at some point.

“I am really emboldened by what Starz is doing with TORCHWOOD and I would love to do a PUSHING DAISIES mini-series on Starz,” Fuller says. “This would be a great way to wrap up the show properly. [We could] do six great episodes or even a PUSHING DAISIES movie. But I kind of like the idea of a Starz mini-series since they really embraced TORCHWOOD.”

“Pushing Daisies” Comic to Receive Score

There are a lot of rumors circling around the upcoming “Pushing Daisies” comic book, but how does this sound: a musical comic? Bryan Fuller mentioned to Entertainment Weekly that it may very well be released with a score. His exact words are below:

Question: Is there any news at all about the Pushing Daisies comic books? — Eric

Ausiello: Here’s an update from Bryan Fuller himself: “Issue number 1 will hopefully be out in early 2011, issue number 2 is being colored as we speak, and issue number 3 is being written. Our Emmy-award-winning composer Jim Dooley and I have been talking about giving the audience a multimedia experience with the comic—specifically a score. We have no idea whether we can actually afford to do an actual Pushing Daisies comic soundtrack (because the cast has agreed to sing songs and those licensing fees are expensive), but Jim has already started composing musical cues that we will either release officially or stream for freesies online when the comic book is published. I’ve already heard the track for Lee Pace’s cover ditty and it’s fantastic.”
